Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: an obligatory levy of 2.5% on wealth that has exceeded the nisab threshold for one lunar year. It purifies wealth, strengthens social justice and ensures that prosperity circulates within society instead of accumulating with a few.
Every Muslim of legal maturity and sound mind whose zakatable wealth exceeds the nisab for a full lunar year is obliged to pay. The recipients are defined in the Quran (9:60): among others the poor, the needy, people in debt and travellers in distress.
Zakat is due once per lunar year (hawl) at a rate of 2.5% of your zakatable wealth. You can choose your own annual due date; many pick a date in Ramadan since good deeds carry special weight in this month.
The nisab is the minimum threshold above which zakat becomes obligatory: the equivalent of 85g of gold or 595g of silver. The silver basis results in a lower threshold and is considered the more cautious choice, as more people in need benefit.
Debts that are due within the coming lunar year may be deducted from your assets. If the remaining wealth still exceeds the nisab, zakat is due on that remainder. Deducting the entire remaining balance of long-term loans is not customary.
The rate of 2.5% on monetary wealth, gold and silver comes from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Other asset types have their own rates, for example agricultural produce or livestock.
Included are cash and bank balances, gold and silver, trade goods and, depending on intention, stocks, ETFs and cryptocurrencies. Not included are things for personal use: your home, car, furniture or clothing.
Zakat is a duty of worship and at the same time a powerful social instrument. Use the calculator above for a first solid estimate, and seek qualified advice for complex situations such as business assets.
